Thurs June 9, 6P, ULP
In our second optional practice we will focus on:

Control/Trapping
Shooting
The structure of the practice will be (approx.):

WU - Toss and Control - Players move around the space freely, tossing their  own ball in the air and trying to control it before it lands. Players dribble around controlling, then repeat the activity.
Coaching Points:  Have player's body touch ball before it first hits the ground.  Have players control first touch with different body parts: foot, head, thigh, etc.
Have players flick ball into hands before the toss, don't allow them to pick  the ball off the ground with their hands.  Watch for height. Encourage different heights.
Have players fake before their first touch, fake on way to first touch in  the opposite direction.

Correct kicking form - 1. seated on ground, kick ball out of hand about 2 feet in the air and catch it.  Toe pointed, ankle locked, strike with laces so that ball either forward spins or doesn't spin.  It should not backspin or go back to the face, but go straight up.  After getting the feel try 2 consecutive hits.
Standing - kick the ball, like a punt, 6-7 feet in the air, with no spin or slight forward spin, but no backspin, and catch it.  Once players can do that, try hitting the ball off the bounce, or 2 kicks in a row.

(optional) Throw and Control - Players in pairs. Each pair has a ball. Players face one another roughly 5 yards apart. Player A throws ball underhand to feet of player B who controls ball with top (laces) of foot and passes back to A. Continue for 10 throws and swap. Variations 1: Increase distance to 10 yards between players. Control ball with inside of foot. Control ball with outside of foot.  Variations 2: A throws the ball toward B's knees, B controls with thigh.

Receive and shoot - Goalie in goal. Players divided into two groups. One group with a ball each stands at right-hand of goal, on goal line. Other group stands in front of goal, 20 yards away. Player A at front of goal line passes toward player B at front of other line. B runs in and strikes the ball at goal. B retrieves shot and moves to back of line at goal. A moves to end of line facing goal. Continue for 5 shots for each player.  Variations: 1 or 2 touch.  Tap to left or right.

Receive and shoot 2 - Balls coming from the side:  All players create a single file line 10 -15 yards from the goal and  approximately 5-10 yards to the out-side the left goal post.  Coach is directly across from them and standing 5-10 yards outside of the right goal post with all of the balls.  Roll or pass them the balls on the ground. They should be running at the ball, parallel to the goal and then striking it as the two  meet.  Run this drill over and over again until all of the players shoot  at least 4 times.  Once everyone has gone through 4 or 5 times, switch sides  and have them striking the ball with the other foot.

Shooter's Delight - Set a cone 20-25 yards from the goal, and have all players line up behind the goal post excluding three players who will be passing balls for shots. The passers stand with a ball at distances of about 5 yards, 10 yards, and 15 yards from the goal. The first player in the line at the post sprints out around the cone and back towards the goal and the first player passes the ball out in the middle and the runner takes a one or two touch shot. The shooter continues to run and shoots all three balls.  This drill works best with 4-7 players. If you have more, try running this with two runners and two sets of passers, going at the same goal, but with left and right footed shot set ups.

First Shot - Two lines of players one on the outside of each  post of one goal.  Goalie in goal.  Two cones out at the 18 yard mark even with the goal posts.  Have one player from each line sprint out to the cones, then roll a ball out toward the goal in the center of the cones, the first player to reach the ball is on offence and tries to score, the second player is on defence and tries to get the ball away and stop the shot. The goalie gets practise dealing with break-aways.   var - roll the ball closer to one of the players.

Core Drill 2 - 1 line (O) near midfield with the ball, 1 line near side of penalty box (D).  O dribble s toward penalty box and tries to score while D player from line 2 tries to prevent a clean shot.  var - 2 players come from line 2.  var 2 - 2 players from line 1 and 2 players from line 2.

Full Speed shot - all players at midfield, 1 GK, cone at around 12 yds..  1 player dribbles toward goal to try to score while 2nd player pursues.  Shot must be taken by 12 yd mark.

PKs - first pick target, then look at ball during the shot.  Different players should try goalee.
