In our second practice will be continuing on the skills of:

Offense
And introducing:
Defense
Rules of the Game
The structure of the practice will be (approx.):

Passing by numbers - Everyone inside the square with one ball.  Each player gets a unique number 1...  While moving around the ball must be passed from player 1 to 2 to 3,  etc.  Communication!  After one ball is mastered, add a second.

Heading the ball - Coach will demonstrate the skill.  Then boys will line up and head back a ball tossed by coach.  Finally, try head juggling. We will only occaisionally use heading as a regular technique in games, however, it is important to know the correct skill.

Review Good Space/Bad Space and Rule of 3 -
1. Make bad space into good space
2. ONE  of our players should always be on the ball
3. when you have the ball look for your 2 supporting teammates
4. don't pass right to your teammate... pass to the open space where they are going
(may need to show on whiteboard)

Throw in game - groups of 3.  1 player throws in to one of their open teammates with coach defending.  Then add 1 extra defender.  Finally play 3v3.
Hints: 1. give and go  2. pass and run to split the other 2 teammates

Zone Passing - Divide the large square into two equal zones with 4 players on each of 2 teams (one with pinnies).  Gold starts with the ball,  all 4 players in one zone plus two of the other players.  Count the number of successful passes.  If the ball goes out of bounds or Red intercepts, Red gets the ball and passes to their zone.  2 Gold players follow Red to their zone and the game continues.  Swap for the resting players.

Defensive principles:  When the other team has the ball, everyone on our team is playing defense!  You should know where the other team's players are.  If a player in your area has the ball, 1) get in the way, 2) be a pest, and 3) try to take the ball away (but without letting them get past you).

Team D - rule of 3 for D: pressure, support, balance
1) closest player to the ball applies pressues
2) next closest player plays the escape route and passing lane
3) third player slides over so we are pressuring the ball side of the field
Basically, we want to push the ball near the sideline and keep it there.  Forwards and up mids must make sure that the only way the other team can come down the field is on the sidelines.

Rules - what not to do; free kicks; off sides; touchlines; out of bounds; throw-ins; goal kick; corner kick

3v3 pass and shoot, with GK - 3 lines, 1 GK.  1st player from each line goes to D, next player is O.  Play just like throw-in game.  After score or steal, D goes to end of lines and O goes to D.

15 min. (or whatever works) 5v5 game, 2 goal keepers (or scrimmage with another team)

Team name: We need to vote on our team name.
Next practices Sat. Aug 30 11:30A, VMS2, Pics Tues Aug 2, 6:15 AVHS, followed by a short practice.
