Tues 5/25, 7:15P, Hayes Field #2
In our third practice we will concentrate on:

rules
goal keeping
ball control
dribbling
receiving
passing
The structure of the practice will be (approx.):
We will talk a bit about penalties and what the boys can and cannot do during a game.
  Goal Keeping
Drill 1 - each child will stand opposite a partner, with one ball for each pair of players.  The first player will roll the ball to the second, and that player will practice scooping the ball and bringing it into the body.  Then player 2 will roll the ball to player 1.
Drill 2 - same as drill one, except each player will be on their knees and we will practice diving to save the ball using a pendulum roll.  The key is to roll on the side of the body on the rib cage, and not on the front or the back.  The arm closest to the ground should be extended so the player doesn't land on the elbow.
Box Drill - the boys will set up in groups of four, with each group spread out on the corners of a square marked with cones.  Each group will have one ball.  At the signal, the players will pass the ball randomly around their group.  We are going for speed and accuracy.
This is an important drill as this formation will be the basis of our games.

Box Drill + 1 - as above, except an additional player will join each group.  The extra player will stand inside the square and try to intercept a pass, without stealing the ball directly from any player.  This will hopefully cause the boys to react quicker with their passing.

Run And Shoot 3 (2 on 1)- We will make two lines, each in line with, but a bit downfield of, the corners of the penalty area.  Each person in line 1 has a ball.
GO - first child in line 1 starts to dribble the ball as the first child in line 2 moves toward the goal.
The two players must pass back and forth and try to score a goal, with one of the coaches playing defence!  I will be very difficult for the ball handler to score if they don't pass.

Run And Shoot 4 (3 on 2)- We will make three lines, center, and left and right wing, facing the goal.  One additional child will play defence and one will play goal.
GO - The three players must pass back and forth and try to score a goal.

Game review - I would like to take a few minutes to talk about the positions on a soccer team and a couple of rules.  We will review: the positions, how to start a game, hand ball, sportsmanship/roughness, and I'll try to explain offsides!

6 vs. 6 game, no goal keeper, no score (or scrimmige with another team)
Next practice will be on Thurs. 5/27 at 6P at Hayes Field #2.
