2008 Fall Indoor/Classroom Coaches Clinic
- Ask questions, redirect or tangent, this is your clinic!
- Purpose
(remember to have a plan!)
provide tools to make coaching as easy and fun as possible
ideas for new coaches
new ideas for experienced coaches
indoor/classroom builds on the outdoor clinic
intended for after you have met with your team
we need feedback
- basic team goals for the individual
passing, vision, communication, coordinated attack and defend,
individual skills to enhance team play
Basically: to become a better player and teammate
This is for all age levels above K. Even for younger players it is good
for the coach to know what the (older eventual) goals are.
Elements of a Practice
- always include basic techniques - dribbling, passing/receiving
1,2,3,4 - simple -> complex
always end with a game
- USYS 4-step practice:
(technical) unrestricted space warm-up, restricted space, match-related, game
(tactical) fundamental warm-up, match-related 1, match-related 2, game
Principles of Attack and Defense
- Attack Defense
Penetration <--> Delay
Support <--> Depth
(angle, distance)
Width <--> Concentration
Mobility <--> Balance
(creating space)
Improvisation <--> Patience/Discipline
Theory
- everything comes in 3's!
- Triangles - basic shape on field
create tri's on O to move ball/create options (draw picture)
create tri's on D to funnel ball carrier and remove options (draw picture)
- 1st/2nd/3rd attacker (carry, pass, run) and defender (pressure, cover,
balance)
The Field
- Positions - GK, Back/Fullback, Sweeper, Stopper, "D", Midfielder,
(offensive/defensive mid), Winger, Forward, Striker
- Formations - 7: 33, 222; 9: 332, 323; 11: 433, 442, 343, 352; flat; diamond
6: 212, 221, 122; 8: 331, 322, 232.
- Team shape - awareness of teammates' positions, balance, moving up/down
the field
- 3rds of the field and risk
Offense
- Basics - possess the ball, support teammate, runs "off the ball", space, penetration, making things happen
- intermediate:
Timing Runs - "beat" the offsides, timed accurate pass
Overlaps - get numbers up, awareness of gaps on field
Switching fields - typically mid or attacking 3rd, but can work through D.
Defense
- Basics - protect the goalkeeper, ball to the outside, nothing in
front of the net
- Delay the attack, see the runs developing, don't have to steal, positional play, watch the "back door"
- offsides trap
Game Plans
- Positions and players - rotation, often best to keep player in a
"similar" position for the game.
Watching the Game
- let the game develop
- what's working, what's not?; opponent's strengths/weaknesses
Coaching the Game
- let the players get into the flow of the game
- Giving Directions: Coach, GK, other players - keep it simple, let the players make decisions
Game Situations
- Restarts - Goal Kick, Corner Kick, Free Kick, Penalty Kick, Throw-In
- Adjustments - formations changes, shadowing
Practice
- Building a practice from the previous game
- Questions/Discussion
- Feedback
