      B.  Parent(s)/Guardian(s) Expectations:

            1.  Encourage your athlete to achieve academic excellence.

            2.  Be involved in your athletes’ activities by coming to meets, invitationals, participating and being a part of the booster club activities.

      D.  Team Parties

            1.  Purpose – The AVHS Boys Swim and Dive team has a tradition of having a weekly team party.  This is to continue team camaraderie, relax after a long week of practice and meets, and just to socialize and have fun.  These parties are hosted at a team member’s home, generally on Saturday nights during the season, with the hosting member’s parent(s) chaperoning.

            2.  Participation is encouraged but not mandatory.  Non-swimmer/divers attendance is at the hosting parent’s discretion.

            3. Any parent can volunteer to host a party.  A schedule will be organized by the Parent Booster Club and published.

VI. AVHS Swim and Dive Team Parent Booster Club

      A.  Purpose - We are an organization comprised of parents and guardians of Apple Valley Swimmers and Divers.  Our mission is to help provide a fun and memorable experience by supporting our athlete’s team and coaches in whatever way we can.  We work to raise money for the team to fund Swim and Dive team activities and needed equipment.  We are extremely proud of the team, coaches and the school.  The Booster Club is a great way to get involved by supporting your athlete, and his team and coaches, and to meet and socialize with other team members parents.

      B.  Club Events:

            1.  Swim meets and the AVHS Swim & Dive Invitational.

                  a. The Booster Club runs the meet.  Parent/athlete volunteers accomplish this.  The Club responsibilities consist of:

(1)  Set up and tear down of the pool - chairs, swim lanes, diving board, speakers, etc

(2)  Time keeper/electronic timer on each lane (electronic button)

(3)  Manual timer on each lane (stopwatch)

(4)  Announcer – responsible for electronic timer and PC.

(5)  Ticket sales at door

(6) Concession stand sales

            2.  Fund raisers:

                  a. Money raised by the booster club supports the teams’ capital equipment needs and comes from fund raising events and parents/athletes timing at the High School and Middle School swim meets.  Previous purchases using booster club funds have included a new Colorado Systems timing system with pads, new lane lines, score board, back stoke flags and standards, record board, swim parkas and “All American” and “State Champion” banners.

                  b. The Booster club conducts fundraisers with volunteer help from both parents and the athletes.  This includes pre-ticket sales, volunteers to work the events and donations of items for the events.

                  c. Fundraisers scheduled for this year include:

                        (1)  Swim meets – (paid for running the meets)

(2)  Steak Dinner – Apple Valley American Legion

                        (3)  Concession stand at home swim meet and the AVHS Swim/Dive Invitational.

                        (4)  Pancake Breakfast – Apple Valley American Legion

                        (5)  Cub bagging

                        (6)  VonHanson’s brat/hotdog sale (summer)

            3.  Special events- along with the weekly team party, other events scheduled for this year are listed in Appendix2 (more information will be published by the Club prior to the events).

VII. Swim/Dive Meet Basics

      A.  A meet consists of 12 events, completed in the same sequence at every meet.  The exception is that diving competition can be held at a different time and location due to pool constraints.  The 12 events are listed in Appendix 3.

B.  Explanations of Meet Terms/Events

1.      Meet - A series of events held in one program.

2.      Dual Meet – a meet between two schools

3.      Double Dual Meet – a meet between 3 schools (such as when we compete against both Lakeville North and South in the same meet).  In that case, scoring is treated as if it were two separate meets.

4.      Event – Any race or series of races (heats) in a given stroke and distance.

5.      Heat - A division of an event used when there are too many swimmers to compete simultaneously.  There are often 3 heats for any event: Exhibition, Junior Varsity and Varsity.  Only Varsity scores are used to tabulate meet results (except in a True Team meet).  Sometimes Junior Varsity scores are kept.

6.      Seed - A way in which participants are divided into the required number of heats and /or lanes, according to their entry or preliminary times.

7.      Lane placement - In a dual meet, one team swims in the odd lanes (1, 3, and 5) and one in the even lanes (2, 4, and 6).   In invitationals or tournaments lane placement is seeded by entry time.  Fastest swimmers are placed in the center lanes; however in dual meets lane placement may be used as a tactical measure by the coach.

8.      Swim Scoring - The 5 fastest varsity times receive a score, 6, 4, 3, 2 and 1 points for 1st – 5th places in individual events and 8, 4 and 2 points for 1st-3rd places in relays.

9.      Dive Scoring – Each dive is scored by 3 judges.  The 3 scores are added together and then multiplied by the degree of difficulty for that dive.  A Varsity diver will perform six dives.  The total of the scores from the six dives is the diver’s final score.  The final scores are ranked and the team is awarded 6, 4, 3, 2 or 1 point for 1st-5th place respectively.

10.  Invitational – A meet for a number of schools at the invitation of a school.

11.  True Team – a special section meet at which the place every swimmer finishes contributes to the total team score.  So, if there are 20 total swimmers competing in an event, all 20 of them will score points for their team.  Thus a team’s score is based on all of the team members and not just those swimming in the varsity heats.

12.  Sectional Meet – a meet at the end of the season.  Only those swimmers/divers who have qualified (by beating a certain time or score) may swim.  The top finishers in the section meet qualify for the state meet.

13.  State Meet – the final meet of the season held at the U of M.  Only the top finishers from the section meet compete.

      C.  Expected behavior for meets is located in Appendix 5.

      D.  AVHS Invitational Information is located in Appendix 6.

    1. Leave a note in my teachers box located in the main office.
    2. Leave a message on my school voice mail at 651-683-6969 box# 3364.
    3. Leave a message with the school secretary at 431-8200.
    4. Phone me at Valley Middle pool at 431-8309.

  • If you do not contact Mac and miss practice, you will not be entered into the next meet.
  • The only excused misses for practices are for religion classes.
  • All other situations have to be spoken about to the coaching staff – IN ADVANCE!
  • IF YOU ARE LATE TO PRACTICE THERE IS A PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE REMINDER.

EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCES

There are situations that arise very suddenly usually with little or no warning and without any control over the circumstances by you.

    1. Making up school work that was not turned in on time or that is due tomorrow because you procrastinated, is not an extenuating circumstance.
    2. Work schedules are not an extenuating circumstance.
    3. Tests some times take on an extenuating circumstance.  You know your school schedule better that I do.  If you think you may have to miss practice because of a test or tests:
      • Talk to me ahead of time – no not the night before or the day of.
      • Perhaps coming to morning practice and being excused for the afternoon practice would be the best solution.

You need to leave Mac a note or call him; otherwise you will not be entered into the next meet.

  • These are things that may happen to anyone.  However they may also be avoided and eliminated through care and consideration of you by yourself.  Get the rest and sleep your body requires!
  • BE PRUDENT and considerate of your body as an athlete.  Eat well, snack well, and drink lots of water and fruit juices – especially at practice.  Bring a water bottle to every practice and every meet.
  • You may NOT share a water bottle at practice.
  • Aches and pains are part of being an athlete, expect them and talk with me about them.

Typically if someone is out of town for more than a ”few” days, usually over Christmas, then they will not be entered into the next meet.  This usually because of the amount of practice time that has been missed.

·        Respect the American flag and the National Anthem.

·        Spectators must wear clothing that covers the entire torso. Those who do not comply or who wear clothing that is vulgar, obscene or that in some other way inappropriate, as determined by school/tournament personnel, will be removed from the arena/stadium if they do not cooperate with this behavior expectation.

·        The use of appropriate language is expected at all times. Profanity, negative chants, booing, trash talk, name calling, personal attacks or other acts of disrespect are unacceptable and must be immediately addressed by school and/or tournament administrators.

·        Respect the game/contest. Under no condition shall anyone other than the members of the official squad enter the playing surface. No one may interfere with the contest in any way.

·        Hand held signs, which do not obstruct the view of others, will be permitted provided they are in good taste. Signs, message boards, “white” boards or other similar items contest/tournament officials deem to be in poor taste will be removed.

·        Artificial noisemakers (i.e. megaphones, cowbells, sirens, whistles, thunder sticks, and other similar items) are not allowed.

·        Laser lights are strictly prohibited.
